Abstract
This thesis is an examination of the use of improvisational performance in dance therapy with adolescents in clinical settings. The use of improvisation is explored both through a review of the literature and a study of interviews with seven Bay Area therapists conducted by the author. The thesis focuses on the goals and benefits of improvisation with special attention also given to the kinds of resistance and defenses that adolescents present in treatment. The author develops a definition of improvisation that is applicable to dance therapy in the clinical setting.
