Abstract
This thesis was conceived with a two-fold purpose in mind. The first is an attempt to unify the seemingly opposing factions witnessed in traditional versus nontraditional religious viewpoints. It is an attempt to rediscover that the two were originally united, and that much can be gleaned from either perspective. As science and religion will someday converge, so too will metaphysics and religion one day again be seen as a tandem realities and expressions of a whole tradition. This work acknowledges that traditional religion has a great deal to offer, and sees nontraditional viewpoints as supporting and adding greater depth and dimension to those fundamental truths. Secondly, it is an effort to help reclaim the heritage of women. The full reclamation of women's heritage will enable the whole of society to be better balanced. This work addresses the individual, so that we can see within ourselves that much of our belief systems have been the result of an imposed male-dominant thrust. By reclaiming women's heritage, and that of the Goddess, we become stronger individuals, better able to benefit society. This thesis directly addresses the concept of the virgin Mary as a Mother Goddess, and indirectly addresses the psychological and cultural genocide that has taken place against women. This oppression has been so complete that many of us cannot see that we have been brainwashed into accepting and making the dominant viewpoint our own.
