Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine completion and recidivism rates amongst juvenile offenders who participated in the Carlsbad Police Department Juvenile Justice Program for Diversion. The subjects were examined between the years 2010 and 2012. There were 316 participants in the program ranging from 12 to 17 years of age. All juveniles were first time offenders and the criminal offenses they committed were categorized as: property crimes, crimes against persons, and substance-abuse related crimes. Criminal offenses ranged from infractions, misdemeanors, and some felonies. Quantitative data was collected during that three year period and categorized by the participant’s demographics, the types of criminal offense, successful completion of the program and rates of recidivism.
