Abstract

Identity development in first-generation and second-generation South Asian immigrant youth is a complex process that includes navigating issues such as belonging, acculturation, family influence, religion, romantic relationships, and mental health. This literature review examines these issues to determine how these experiences shape identity development for South Asian immigrant youth through a multicultural lens. Although there has been research done to look at these themes, few research studies have demonstrated how to address the gaps and how counsellors can best support clients who present with these cultural issues. Future recommendations on how to best support counsellors are suggested to address these gaps.
