Codependents participating in a five day behavior modification program to reduce anxiety were given the State - Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) - Form Y, tc determine the change in State - Anxiety and Trait - Anxiety over the treatment period. The treatment consisted of codependency education, relaxation techniques, and group process. Seventeen five day treatments were studied (total N = 38). Results indicated the treatment produced a significant reduction in S and T anxiety (p ≤ .000069) when before and after treatment scores were compared. The score change was also significant (p = .0079) when compared with a norm group. During the study, changes were made in staffing and treatment mode which had a positive effect (p ≤ .01). Age of participants (range 19 - 69) was not significant. It is not known if the State and Trait Anxiety reduction will persist over time, and the need for further investigation is discussed.
