My purpose in constructing a biographical image of Rudolph Schaeffer is to aid in identifying and understanding his contribution to Western regional art history. The impact of his personality is apparent throughout the Bay Area through his students, his School, his Oriental collection, and his East- West Arts Gallery. Also in documenting his life, I can further the museum function of the gathering and use of archival material -- material needed for serious researchers and the general public alike.
