Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide a compendium of knowledge concerning subject access systems and the visual arts. I first learned of subject accessing when developing a prototype access system for the Department of Research/Collections and Registration at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Since my initial encounter with subject access systems, I determined to bring together in written form as much of the scattered information on various access systems and the issues involved in subject accessing as I could. The results follow. The intent of this study is not to argue for the creation of subject access to collections. Rather, given the need for such access and the movement toward computerization of such collection data, I will discuss the history and development of systems, including a review of existing systems. A recent survey of many of these systems can be found in the Appendices. I have also included in the Appendices an example of the system I created. There is also an annotated bibliography relating to subject access and computerization.
