Abstract
The primary goal for this odontology research study is to develop a deeper understanding of all methods of the science and tools used within the field by forensic odontology crime scene investigators as well as forensic odontology lab technicians. The objective is to learn how to determine reliability and verify findings with extensive research through case studies, practices and guidelines of professional forensic odontology associations. Where appropriate, photographs and tables will provide illustration as to how a suspect or victim is itdentified using odontology methods. Future odontology research trends, innovations in research tools, cutting-edge methods, and new analytical projects are all emerging focal points of the odontology discipline. Critical issues, policies and procedures regarding bite marks and analysis will be reviewed in detail in an effort to educate and enhance existing instruction materials used within the forensic community. If investigating officers are not trained sufficiently in identifying these bite marks, valuable evidence can be lost. Since 1975, when the first trial involving bite mark evidence occurred, bite marks have proven to be a great tool in identifying the perpetrator (Logg, 1991). Continued practice of the discipline serves as groundwork for increased awareness and use by law enforcement personnel and crime scene investigators in the future.
