Abstract
The purpose of this master's project is to propose how museum collection management standards can be implemented in the management of popular musicians' archives. Through case studies of three popular United States underground jam bands, the project assesses and analyzes how a specific group of underground musicians collects its history, what they collect and why they collect it. The project applies its findings to emerging museums and archival collections in the U.S. that maintain a mission to preserve and to display the impact of popular music on history and society. The project helps to facilitate a link between underground jam band musicians and museums, using research findings to create a product for museums to distribute to musicians, assisting them in establishing, developing and maintaining archives for the future preservation of this important facet of American culture.
