Abstract

BLoodstain pattern analysis has its roots set earlier in history than many people might think. In the early 1800s German authors used the term “blutspritzen” in their writings. The word blutspritzen translates into “blood sprinkles.” Also in the 1800s, other evidence of writings on bloodstain patterns found at crime scenes have used the term “fly specks” in reference to the small stains. Bloodstain pattern analysis has become more advanced as the years have passed and the interest in the subject has grown. The use of bloodstain pattern analysis’ findings has become more widely accepted and used in courts of law. There have been many famous and non-famous cases in which bloodstain pattern analysis has been used. From Samuel Sheppard to O.J. Simpson, the analysis of bloodstain patterns has proved crucial in acquittal and even conviction.
