Abstract
As holistic health educators, we must address why so many Americans are seeking an alternative to the traditional, mainstream model of healthcare. Could it be the pervasive dis-ease that surrounds us called fragmentation? If the symptoms of this dis-ease are isolation and loneliness, then I propose that coherence and meaningful biological and spiritual relationship are the remedy we are seeking. Our quest for a more holistic approach to how we live is evidence that we are ready for a shift that brings these qualities into our selves and our environment. This paper addresses how we, as individuals, communities, and universal consciousness, can relieve our suffering and lack of homeostasis and return to an innate state of wholeness and balance that already exists within each of us by applying a living systems approach. A living systems theory model illustrates how meaning in our lives, culture, and universe can be established by rebuilding our belief in relationships and the integrity of the whole as the most valuable and healthy aspect to our beings.
