Abstract

The ultimate purpose of this research is to determine how exhibitions can provide a vehicle for museums to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. The processes involved are complex and unique to individual museums, but by looking to systems approaches including design thinking, organizational learning, adaptive leadership, and how business and nonprofits create cultures of innovation, I hope to provoke change in the status quo. The evolving role of museums is predicated on their ability to adapt to meet the needs and expectations of their visitors. The public is increasingly sophisticated in its tastes, it is becoming more diverse, and is easily distracted with offerings from other cultural and entertainment sectors. Breaking down existing barriers within museums will lead to better, truly groundbreaking exhibitions that exemplify the promise of the field. The new rule among the museum community is that of constant evolution.
