Abstract
Childhood experiences provide the foundation of an individual’s development into their identity. These early experiences contribute to shaping how we perceive the world, regulate our emotions, form relationships, and respond to stress. In this capstone, I examine the significant role that childhood experiences play in shaping an individual’s well-being and outcomes in adulthood. I explore a few of the many factors that influence development and experiences such as culture, protective factors, and systemic challenges. The findings in the literature indicate that childhood experiences have lasting impacts that differ for everybody. Positive experiences such as a safe and supportive environment have shown to be associated with improved overall well-being in adulthood. On the contrary, the more adversities individuals experienced in their childhood, the more likely they are to face challenges in their adulthood such as mental and physical health issues. As the impacts show up differently for everybody, it is critical to consider individual differences during treatment. By taking on a person-centered and trauma-informed approach, counselors can personalize treatment to their client’s needs and values. Taking into account the complexity of the matter, more research is required to understand the impact of childhood experiences at different stages in development and the best ways to intervene. Although deeper research would be beneficial, longitudinal studies on the topic of adverse childhood experiences face many challenges including ethical issues.
