Abstract
This research study entails creating developmentally appropriate strategies and materials to effectively teach literacy skills at a level that is comprehensible for the ELs in my classroom. I will use specific HMRP lessons and English learner student evidence (worksheets, journals, assessments, observation checklists) to demonstrate that ELs do not comprehend scripted and explicit phonics instruction. Results were compared with the initial baseline data to determine if the HMRP modifications were effective in developing literacy skills in English for the second language speakers in my classroom. The eight English learners in this research study improved their overall literacy skill development after they received the additional scaffolded instructional support.
