Abstract
My interest in this project originated during 1979 when I was preparing an article entitled, "A Legion of Donors," published in "California Living," San Francisco Examiner, on December 23, 1979. During the research process, I became aware that historical material pertaining to the founding and early management of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is widely dispersed and not organized consistently. Hence, retrieval meant long hours searching files and interviewing those persons still alive in the Bay Area who could provide information. It became increasingly clear that records management is needed at the museums. Although my own particular objective is to see an archives established as a research facility, I realized that no such goal could be reached without an assessment of the entire record-keeping system. Therefore, I have undertaken this study for the purpose of defining the problems as they presently exist and recommending procedures for change.
