Abstract

There have been many studies conducted to determine what traits are present in successful athletes. These studies have tested numerous individuals and groups to help illustrate what traits assisted successful athletes with many different aspects of competing. The studies have reviewed many subjects such as, cognitive development in athletes and how it affects their decision making skills (McMorris, 1999), self-determination levels in athletes and how it influences their perceived competence and intrinsic motivation (Markland, 1999), and the levels of self-efficacy in athletes and how it affects their level of confidence (EscartI & Guzmán, 1999). These studies can assist coaches and recruiters in identifying individuals with the traits necessary to succeed in a particular sport, as well as assist other members of the team in enhancing their existing traits to form a successful and cohesive unit. Many of the studies have used college student-athletes for their populations.
