Abstract
This qualitative study examined the mental techniques that place-kickers use when preparing to kick a field goal. Three high school kickers, three college kickers, and two professional kickers were involved in the study. Each participant was asked a set of predetermined questions to ascertain what mental techniques they utilize when preparing to kick a field goal. It was discovered that the place-kickers use visualization, relaxation, positive self-talk, focusing strategies, cue words and a pre-kick routine to enhance their performance. The high school kickers indicated that they dislike the pressure associated with kicking, while the college and professional kickers stated that they relish the pressure. The high school place-kickers implemented the fewest number of mental techniques, while the professional kickers employed the most strategies. These findings support results from previous studies in other closed skill sport activities.
