Abstract

This thesis examines the role of spontaneous, improvisational movement within dance-movement therapy treatment with an acute psychotic population. Dance-movement therapy literature, drama therapy literature, and psychological literature are reviewed for information concerning the value of creative, spontaneous expression in promoting personal integration and well-being. Interviews are conducted with three bay area dance-movement therapists for specific descriptions of the function and relevance of improvisational movement in their work. Descriptions and analysis of four dancemovement therapy sessions are included with both group dynamics and individual process examined. In conclusion, further research projects are proposed.
