Abstract

The deterrent effect of Capital Punishment was tested using crime statistics retrieved from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reporting Index. This test compared violent crime occurrences reported by Louisiana and Minnesota in 1998 and 2008. Five tests were conducted in this study; comparing Louisiana violent crime occurrences in 1998 to Louisiana in 2008, Minnesota violent crime occurrences in 1998 to Minnesota in 2008, Louisiana violent crime occurrences in 1998 to Minnesota in 1998, and Louisiana violent crime occurrences in 2008 to Minnesota in 2008. Four violent crime categories were used; Murder, Rape, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault. Using Chi-Square analysis for independence, it was found that there was no significant difference between Louisiana and Minnesota when determining the deterrent effect of Capital Punishment.
