Abstract

My original intent in writing this thesis was to establish the revenue-producing potential of rental galleries. In particular, I wanted to obtain enough data to be able to correlate particular rental gallery practices to a gallery's overall profitability, and thereby to provide information useful in the making of rental gallery management decisions. Unfortunately, the statistical analysis upon which I had intended to base my study was limited by the quantity and quality of the answers received. Approximately one quarter of the questionnaire related to the financial operations of the galleries. For the majority of the galleries, however, profitability proved to be the least important goal. Of the forty-three galleries participating in the survey, fourteen did not keep account books separate from those of their parent organization, making it difficult for them to answer questions regarding the financial results of the gallery operation.
