Abstract

The purpose of my master's project is to inform the science museum professional community of the impact of visitors' family snapshots on their experience during the visit and on the memories from museum visits. This information is particularly relevant to educators, exhibition designers, and visitor studies professionals concerned with creating memorable experiences for museum visitors. The study assesses the role of photography by family visitors to science centers and examines the memories that the snapshots evoke in the days, weeks, and years following the visit. In an effort to assess the long-term impact of the museum experience, recent studies have focused on the acquisition, retrieval and content of memories of museum experiences. This study builds on and adds to this body of research by considering the role snapshots play in evoking memories from museum visits.
