In this thesis, I will explore the relationship between trauma and addiction. This document contains a review of current epidemiological studies that have demonstrated that childhood adversity is at the core of the emotional patterns and psychological dynamics that drive addiction. This research suggests a high correlation between early childhood trauma and substance use as a means of coping. It is hoped that this work will better inform counsellors working with people with substance use issues, as well as first responders and other (mental) health care workers.
