Abstract

"Masculinity" is a thoroughly studied term from which few conclusive findings have been obtained. The abundance of scales and measurements created from the 1970s to the 1990s failed to produce the desired definitive understanding of the word. One of the major flaws within these measurements was the narrow population under study. This study seeks to provide a more comprehensive way to view the male gender identity through the lens of a female-to-male (FTM) transgender perspective. The qualitative content analysis method was used to identify and label the conceptualizations of masculinity and what it meant to the eight participants to be a man. The data was analyzed in an attempt to come to an understanding of these concepts from an FTM perspective. The underlying belief is that these definitions and conceptualizations of masculinity and maleness will contribute to society's understanding of the term.
