Abstract

The part of the collection that is discussed in this catalogue is that which is hanging on the walls of the Headquarters of the California Historical Society at 2090 Jackson Street, San Francisco and is open to public view. This part of the collection encompasses thirty-nine artists and seventy paintings as well as including fifteen portraits. These works span sixty years; the earliest painting, Mission Valley, was done in 1857 by a local woman artist Mary Park Seavey Benton and the latest is Maynard Dixon's 1916 rendering, Sunshine and Rain.
