Abstract

Few topics arouse such strong emotions as that of pedophiles. Despite the severe consequences of their actions, pedophiles continue to offend. For many years, experts have tried to determine the causes of pedophilia to aid in its prevention and treatment. Researchers have recognized that is important to understand the pedophilic thought process, in particular the ability to deflect feelings of guilt and remorse, to understand pedophilic behavior. This research study attempted to identify and analyze the thought process that leads pedophiles to offend. Understanding this thought process can aid in the development of treatment and prevention programs for both pedophiles and their victims. The results of this study indicate that pedophiles may be able to offend—some hundreds of times—before they are caught because they are able to disassociate themselves from any feelings of guilt or remorse toward their victims.
