Abstract

The author developed a course curriculum designed to train graduate counselling students in spiritual competencies which can be applied in clinical practice. Nine competencies for integrating spirituality into counselling as developed by the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling were used as the basis for the development of this new course. Following a review of the literature, the author offered a comprehensive rationale for including a course on spiritual issues in counsellor training programs, and examined published course syllabi, potential textbooks, existing content analyses, curriculum strategies and recommendations, and research on training and education in counsellor education programs. A detailed course syllabus and instructor's manual included recommended resources, assignment descriptions, suggestions for classroom ecology and activities, and assessment procedures. The course description concluded with a discussion of limitations and ideas for further development
