In this paper I will describe these events and some of their imagery. I will explore some of the symbolic meanings of the visual and metaphoric images I encountered. I will then demonstrate and document with research in shamanic literature that my experiences correlate with the initiatory discoveries of the shaman. In order to differentiate that which the shaman encounters from other types of experience I will use sources from anthropology, philosophy, and the history and/or theology of religions.
