Abstract

Using the Enneagram in conjunction with coaching helps the coach and client uncover the layers of the presenting issue, as well as what lies beneath the specific psychological patterns and belief systems. The coach can use the model of the Enneagram to encourage the client to slow down and observe his or her thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. When we are present to what we are experiencing, there is more possibility to see that we are more than our experience. I will give a personal example of myself as a coach who identifies with the Type Nine personality in order to illuminate this particular topic. I will discuss my own subjective, intersubjective and objective experiences as a Nine coach while pointing to my particular strengths and growing edges in the profession and on a transformational path. Next, I will synthesize the Enneagram types in to the three primary Centers in the human being: head, heart, and body, and I will describe the general patterns and characteristics of each of the corresponding types within the Center. I will then talk about how the coach can best serve each of the individual types. A set of Integral practices for each type will be suggested, including a practice from a heart, head, body, and spiritual perspective. I will conclude by focusing on the transformational process of using the Enneagram within the context of coaching, including, the client's potential experience, and the coach's unique role.
