Desire discrepancy is the most common issue for many couples that come into the counselling room. As counsellors, experiencing clients presenting with issues related to desire discrepancy is likely going to happen. As such, exploring what desire discrepancy is, how it can influence a relationship, the models for understanding it, and what clinicians can possibly do about it is important. In order to help new clinicians, gain more understanding, this paper will explore spontaneous and responsive desire. It will provide two foundational models for understanding what might be happening for clients in the Dual Control Model and the Non-Linear Model of Desire and a model to guide clinicians approach using the PLISSIT Model. This paper will also provide specific suggestions of interventions that can and have been useful for dealing with desire discrepancy and explore the PLISSIT Model as a model to outline how to approach desire discrepancy with a couple. The paper will explore the PLISSIT Model and provide limited information and specific suggestions so clinicians can also apply the PLISSIT Model with couples for desire discrepancy. Finally, specific resources are offered to clinicians for further information and research.
