Abstract
The goal of this guide is to assist the museum technician, who is not familiar with the intricacies of firearms, to catalogue American military shoulder arms. It is hoped that this guide will provide the necessary information for the cataloguer to identify quickly and accurately varying weapon types along with their component parts. It is also intended to introduce the cataloguer to the standard vocabulary of weapons terminology and to ensure some standardization of catalogue descriptions. Furthermore, the guide will focus on the responsibilities of the museum worker to preserve and protect collection artifacts, whether on exhibition or in storage.
