My thesis examines the cultural and economic environment in which museums operate today. The literature indicates that museums exist in an environment that has changed by significant political, technological, and cultural shifts. I briefly outline the types of shifts that have affected museums and the nonprofit sector and explain how the current economic recession has transformed societal shifts into a crisis for museums.
