Abstract
This study reviewed the evidence for a bonding process at birth, prenatal perception and responsiveness, and the possibility of prenatal bonding. Research questions about the maternal attitude towards these were addressed with semi-structured interviews conducted with four expectant mothers and four Practitioners in professional contact with expectant mothers. Widespread agreement was found between interviewees that the unborn child could perceive and be influenced by maternal emotional states. This prospect was frequently reported as potentially guilt-producing or anxiety-producing for expectant mothers. Recommendations for further research and modifications to existing childbirth education practices were made.
