Abstract

Many people find integrative medicine to be a nebulous concept, and even among the experts opinions vary as to the precise definition of integrative medicine. The field of medicine is in transition and, bit by bit, becoming more integrated on various levels. In order for us to move toward a more integrated medicine we must be clear on just what it is we are trying to create. An examination of the nature of integrative medicine and its challenges is grounded in the context of our existing tern biomedical model. Some of the issues afflicting mainstream medicine today are reviewed as background fcr integrating CAM, holism and integral theory into the emerging integral medical model. Ken Wilber's quadrant model is used as a framework in which all ideas of what integrative medicine is can be illustrated and contained. By utilizing a comprehensive framework we can better understand all issues and viewpoints related to the nature of integrative medicine and perhaps begin to see more clearly what sort of integrative or integral medicine we are looking to create and how to move the integration process forward in the future.
