Abstract
Why have spiritual cults become so successful in the United States? What is the intent of these guru-centered organizations? Why do people join such groups? What is the relationship between guru-centered cults and genuine spiritual development?
In addressing these questions I have written this thesis chroniclinig my involvement in Ananda Marga, a lesser-known new age cult but one operating on the same basic principles as all guru-centered paradigms. This thesis tells the story of my rise to prominence in Ananda Marga, my reasons for becoming involved, and the feelings/ thoughts I had about the cult before, throughout and after my membership.
