Abstract
From a review of selected literature, this thesis explores the denotations, connotations and distinctive roles of happiness in psychological well-being from a variety of perspectives. The pertinent and resulting questions that arise from this exploration are discussed with a view to their implications for those who work to guide and direct clients through the journey of this multi-faceted and complex subject. It is also a close look at the all-pervasive "North American dream" which has long suggested that the attainment of material goods is a clear path to happiness. Discussion culminates in the idea of happiness as an attainable and sustainable goal, along with prescriptive tools for the counselor and client.
