Abstract
The purpose of this master's project is to explore how history museums in the United States can develop educational programs that benefit older adults. In museum education literature, the topic of andragogical methods, usually associated with adult learning, is rarely mentioned, compared to pedagogical methods, which are most often identified with children and school age audiences. This project looks beyond the museum field, to adult education specialists, to understand how older adults learn. In addition, this project assesses current educational programs for older adult learners in history museums in the United States, and analyzes existing program models. The final product for this project describes what a model educational program in history museums in the United States should incorporate in order to better serve the growing audience of elderlearners.
