Abstract
Forensic pathologists have become well aware of death by autoerotic asphyxiation in recent years. Although the idea of asphyxiation to increase the stimulus of sexual satisfaction is not new, it has become more recognized by members of law enforcement, medical examiners, and coroners. This paper is a review of articles from 1970 until 2010, which contained 134 case reports of individuals who were either practitioners of this sexual act, or have died accidentally during solo sexual activity. Ten new case studies are included in this research. Standard definitions were taken from the literature and will be used throughout this article. All the case studies were reviewed to determine if the numbers of women victims were increasing, if atypical causes of autoerotic deaths were increasing, if the use of either visual or physical sexual aids were increasing, and if there are an increased number of practitioners using bondage during the practice of autoerotic asphyxiation.
