Abstract

Research has proven that mindfulness is beneficial for individuals with chronic back pain however structured programs are not helpful for all. This thesis proposes that mindfulness can be a personal healing journey, one that is directed by the individual. The current study examined the effectiveness of mindfulness programs in interviews with two people dealing with chronic back pain. Outcomes of the study support the proposal that mindfulness is as individual as the person who defines it. Mindfulness can be used as an empowerment tool, emerging from negativity to a more positive lifestyle. The path to healing is unique, however, this study supports that success can be achieved by setting goals and having a positive mindset.
