Abstract
In summary, there appear to be at least seven educational, social, and economic trends that precipitated the proliferation of educational programs in museums and, specifically, current collaborative activities: 1) the increasing popularity of the view that museums should interpret objects; 2) the willingness of museums to meet the varied educational needs of their community members; 3) the advent of lifelong learning; 4) recognition by museum staff of potential financial support by adults; 5) the identification of adults as the center of family learning; 6) museum-school collaboration for children's programs as a model for adult collaborative programming; and 7) economic pressure on museums to share financial, personnel, and material resources with other museums and community organizations.
