Abstract

While the identification of popular and successful aesthetic themes could be useful to the field, this project is based on the idea that aesthetic literacy can be built over time with exposure, practice, and/or encouragement. The interviews are therefore used to also determine what interpretive techniques, if any, are currently being used when presenting invertebrates. In the conclusions and recommendations section of this project, it is proposed that aesthetic themes could be built upon to provide cohesive exhibits and programs that allow audiences to be met not only at their level of knowledge, but also their stage in aesthetic development. VTS is discussed as one way to promote aesthetic appreciation of nature in museums, while the broader role that aesthetics potentially hold in promoting invertebrates and nature in museums is also discussed.
