Abstract

Millions of children are exposed to domestic violence every year. Studies have shown that child abuse and general neglect are prevalent in homes where domestic violence occurs. New studies now reveal that children who have been exposed to or have been witnesses to domestic violence are adversely affected by it. The scars are not always visible, but short-term and potential long-term adjustment problems have been increasingly documented (Holden, Geffner & Jounles, 1998). This project will examine the risks of domestic violence on children and how child protective services responds to these risks in their investigations. It will address the historically combative relationship between child protection agencies and domestic violence advocates and ways these two systems are attempting to work together to avoid separating families.
