Abstract
The purpose of this article is to determine how immigration detention influences the mental health functioning of detainees. By understanding the psychological effects among Central American adult and child refugees that are detained in U.S. immigration facilities, appropriate policy changes can be implemented to support the wellbeing and resiliency of this population. Awareness of the unique experiences of Central American refugees (during pre- and post-migration) will enable professionals to better understand migrants' specific mental health needs and employ strategies that mitigate the effects of further trauma and harm.
