Abstract
The introduction of the Thomas A Swift Electric Rifle (TASER) gave law enforcement another option during encounters in which force is required. These types of devices, known as Electronic Control Devices (ECDs), began to replace other use of force options, even as its safety and effectiveness were in question.
To determine recent trends in ECD use and injury outcomes, several police department reports were acquired and the data analyzed.
The data showed that reported ECD use has increased over the past several years, however the rate of ECD use per use of force event has declined. It also showed that weaponless tactics have increased while ECD use rates have decreased.
The data also showed that the ECD is only significantly associated with minor injuries, and only increases the odds of injury when compared to Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray, and only just as likely to cause injury as physical force.
