Abstract
Tennis coaches of a men's west coast division 1 conference located in the United States, were invited to partake in a qualitative research project. Coaches were encouraged to share their personal experiences relative to the myriad of roles they must fulfill on a day to day. bases. The premise of this process was to explore the following psychological factors; inter role conflict, intra role conflict (role strain), role ambiguity and stress implications. As a result a stress ideogram was diagramed for each coach integral to environmental stressors, stress resistance resources and stress consequences as experienced within their role set. The resulting data was then probed for patterns, themes, and relationships to better understand if the psychological factors share a cultural commonality. The thrust of the study was to investigate if the psychological factors were associated with physiological and psychological symptomology of burnout. Lastly, the research suggests both palatable and instrumental modalities to intervene in the significant factors of role conflict (strain ), role ambiguity, and stress that may manifest burnout.
