Abstract
This paper addresses the rural healthcare crisis facing the Appalachian region of the eastern United States. The author explores the history and culture of the region, highlights some of the challenges it faces, examines the current healthcare crisis in Appalachia, and then evaluates some of the current programs in place intended to alleviate the situation. Upon evaluating these programs, she presents a model based on five (5) criteria recommended as guidelines for future programs while acknowledging the importance of using current programs as the foundation. Emphasis is placed on the benefits of integrating both old and new to create programs that will best serve the population of rural Appalachia.
