In this thesis I shall examine both the role and nature of the 'Satguru (True Lightgiver) in India's medieval and modern Sant (Saint) movements, and also the interpretations of the Satguru that have been made by the Sikh religion and by later Western scholastics. In some respects, this paper is a comparison between modern and medieval perspectives of the Sant Tradition and Sikhism, with equal consideration given to the analysis submitted by contemporary writers.
