Abstract

My observations of life in the forest, the desert, and the sea were abstracted in these sculptures to create a garden-like setting in which strange beings engage in a peculiar dialogue with each other. I used a surrealistic combination of elements of nature to create dichotomies of awkwardness and grace, vulnerability and self-assurance, and enticement and intimidation. My sculptures ambiguous shapes dance between playfulness and seriousness while the sensuous surface textures suggest the rich diversity of life. To make these sculptures I used a concrete base to anchor an armature of PVC pipe, heat bent the pipe into shape, and built it up with wire, hardware cloth, and polyester fiber. I wrapped this armature with canvas on which I used paper pulps, dirt, wood-shavings, fir needles, sand, and plaster, in combination with rhoplex, glues, and acrylic paints.
