Abstract
Past research has found that infection, premature birth, and exposure to environmental toxins increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). More recently, sleep environment has come under scrutiny as a risk factor. This study involved a meta-analysis of eleven scholarly articles related to sleep environment and sudden unexpected infant death. An analysis of these studies is included herein. Results show that bed-sharing, hyperthermia, position of the body during sleep, and bedding materials increase an infant's risk of SUID. Recommendations are made for caregivers, medical professionals, and researchers based on the analysis of the included studies.
