Abstract

The intention of this paper is to analyze why mothers kill their children. Three different hypotheses were researched to determine the cause of women committing this crime. Depression and mental illness were analyzed to determine if this played a role in these crimes. The data was supported and the hypothesis was accepted that mental illness and depression are a factor in women committing these crimes. It was also researched whether mothers were more likely to kill their children or fathers. This hypothesis was not supported because children in the United States are just as likely to be killed by their father as they are their mother. The number one killer of children under the age of five is their parents which can be either the mother or father.
