Abstract
In my thesis I have set out to explain my reason for working with the basket form. The origin of shapes in my baskets has been influenced by the Porno Indian's burden basket and Classical forms of Greek pottery. My choice of materials is a hybrid of the traditional and the contemporary. The traditional pays homage to the historical basket, and the contemporary man-made materials are in response to my culture. My method of construction is a response to the inherent nature of my materials, while imposing a logical order held under a graceful tension. It is important that all these parts and processes are revealed and simultaneously contribute to the whole piece. Finally, I discuss the basket as a record of my experience with materials and ideas.
